Spanish Canary Island Completely Powered By Renewable Energy

El Hierro IslandEl Hierro island, part of the Spanish Canary Island's just off the coast of Morroco, is claiming to be the world's first island to be powered by purely renewable energy. The primary source being hydroelectric power and the secondary source coming from wind turbines.

No El Hierro doesn't mean 'the hero' in Spanish either, I checked and it appears to translate to 'the iron' but I took French in school so what do I know?

Interestingly you might have heard of this island before. I remember seeing a Discovery channel documentary about potential future natural disasters a couple years ago, and this island was featured in one of them. Apparently the island has the potential to break in two, with one half sliding into the Atlantic Ocean. It's said to have the potential to cause a devastating Tsunami capable of wiping out the East coast of the United States. Let's hope they're doing this whole renewable energy thing to appease the gods, because being over here in NY, I don't want to wake up to their wake anytime soon.

Spain’s Main Source Of Electricity Is The Wind

Spanish Wind PowerAt least for this past week, which was a particularly windy week for Spain. As a result the country managed to produce more electricity from the wind than from any other single source of power at total of 27% of the countries power needs.

Nuclear was a close second, and coal came in third. Officials believe this may be the first time Wind power has exceeded other forms of power generation. This is the kind of news we need more of if we hope to curb climate change.

It's wonderful to see people mobilizing around such a deeply important issue.

You can watch the you tube videos after the jump.

Paper Trail Shows White House Edited Climate Reports

RedactedAt a congressional hearing held this past Monday, scientists charged the administration with hiring uninformed oil-friendly lobbyists to edit climate change reports to soften their impact.

Here's an example:

"greenhouse gases are accumulating in the atmosphere as a result of human activities, causing surface air temperatures to rise and subsurface ocean temperatures to rise."

was changed to:

"Some activities emit greenhouse gases that directly or indirectly may affect the balance of incoming and outgoing radiation, thereby potentially affecting climate on regional and global scales."

I can see why the scientists are pissed.
