Massive Chunk of Arctic Ice Breaks Free

Within a matter of hours in 2005, a piece of ice about 41 square miles in size broke free from the Canadian ice shelf. The chunk is only one of 6 shelves like it in the Canadian Arctic. The other shelves have also shrunk by 90% since they were first discovered in 1906. Climate change is being blamed.
Since nobody was around to witness the event, scientists only found out about the break when they were comparing satellite photographs and they noticed a new island of ice. It broke off in the summer of 2005 then floated about 31 miles away where it was assimilated into the sea ice as winter came. Scientists are going to monitor the ice to see if it breaks free again where it could potentially float into shipping lanes.
