The Arctic was once tropical

55 Million years ago, the Arctic ocean had as nice a climate as Florida today. That's the conclusion that scientists studying core samples have come to. The warm period was a result of global warming running out of control, and the source of those greenhouse gases were natural. It provides us with a window into the future, it's an example of just how warm our planet has become due to the same greenhouse effect we see today. 

"Purdue University atmospheric sciences professor Gabriel Bowen, who was not part of the team, praised the work and said it showed that 'there are tipping points in our (climate) system that can throw us to these conditions.'" [Newsday]
